Air mattress with a built-in pump: how it works and what fails

A built-in pump is an electric pump sealed into the side of the air mattress. You plug it in, turn a dial, and it fills the bed in about 2 to 5 minutes on Intex’s figures, depending on size and height. It saves carrying a separate pump, but if it fails you need another way to add air.

How a built-in pump works

Intex describes its built-in pump as a pump mounted inside the airbed with only its control panel showing. The panel carries the power cord, an inflate and deflate control, and on newer models a firmness dial.

On Intex’s 2025 season internal pumps, the dial sets a firmness level anywhere from soft to firm. The pump switches off by itself when it reaches that level and returns the control to its closed position, so you do not have to watch it.

Plug-in, USB and rechargeable built-in pumps

The usual built-in pump is a corded electric pump. Intex’s FAQ refers to the line cord compartment on its internal pumps, and its Pillow Rest and PremAire beds list a built-in electric pump. SoundAsleep’s Dream Series uses what it calls a built-in “1-click” pump.

Intex also sells two other types:

• USB pumps. Intex’s Prestige mid-rise beds pair a built-in pump with USB power, according to its series pages.
• Rechargeable built-in pumps. Intex’s 2025 season built-in mini rechargeable pump (model I637) uses a non-removable lithium battery and comes on certain standard beds.

A rechargeable or USB pump helps where there is no outlet near the bed. A non-removable battery also means the bed is only as long-lived as that battery, so check the warranty.

How long inflation takes

Maker figures for Intex queens show how height adds time:

A twin is quicker: Intex lists about 1 3/4 minutes for its 12 inch twin. The same pump also deflates the bed, which makes packing it away quicker.

Pumps that keep the bed firm overnight

A standard built-in pump only runs when you switch it on. If the bed softens overnight, you top it up in the morning.

SoundAsleep’s CloudNine takes a different approach: a primary pump inflates and deflates, and a secondary smart pump monitors air pressure in the background. That suits a guest who will sleep on the bed for several nights. What fails, and what to do about it

The pump is the only electrical part of the bed, and Intex’s FAQ covers what to do if it stops: if the built-in pump’s panel does not work, you can still inflate and deflate the bed through its 2-in-1 valve with a separate manual or electric pump. On some pump models the valve sits in the dial opening, and on others inside the power cord compartment.

Warranty length also tells you what the maker expects. Intex gives its PremAire and Dura-Beam Deluxe beds a 1-year limited warranty, Dura-Beam Plus 180 days, and Dura-Beam Standard 90 days, with proof of purchase required.

Built-in pump or separate pump?

A built-in pump suits a guest bed kept in a closet and used near an outlet. A separate pump suits camping, cars and anyone who wants a bed with no electrical parts to fail.
