How to find and fix a leak in an air mattress

Why an air mattress goes flat overnight, how to tell a real leak from new-vinyl stretch and cold air, and how to find the hole with soapy water and patch it.

First rule out the two normal causes of a soft morning: new vinyl stretching in its first few uses, and cooler night air. Then check that the valves are shut. If the bed still loses air, spray soapy water over the seams and surface to find the bubbling hole, and patch it on clean, dry vinyl.

Is it really a leak?

Most “leaks” on a new bed are not holes. Intex’s FAQ says stretching is a natural characteristic of new vinyl: for the first few uses the bed stretches under your weight, which feels like it is losing air.

Temperature does the rest. Intex’s owner’s manual says the air inside a bed expands and contracts with temperature, which can lower the pressure, and tells owners to add air with the pump if that happens. Outwell’s airbed manual is more specific: in cold weather the bed loses some pressure as the air contracts, and in hot weather the air expands, so let some out to avoid overpressure. Intex gave New Zealand’s Fair Go program the same explanation. A bed filled in a warm afternoon will feel softer in a cold room at 3 a.m.

SoundAsleep’s FAQ says the same about stretch: its PVC naturally stretches during the first few uses. Outwell’s manual adds that pressure and firmness become stable after several inflations, which is why filling a new bed ahead of time helps.

What to do about stretch and cold

  • Inflate a new bed a day ahead, let it stretch, and top it up before bed.
  • Fill the bed in the room where it will be used, once the room is at its night temperature.
  • Top up in the morning of each day of use, for the first few nights.

If the bed keeps going flat after those first nights, look for a leak.

How to find the leak

  1. Check the valves. Intex’s first step is to make sure the valves are secure, and to replace one if needed. On a built-in pump bed, check that the dial or switch is fully closed.
  2. Inflate firmly. A firm bed pushes air out faster, so the hole is easier to find.
  3. Spray soapy water. Put liquid soap and water in a squirt bottle and spray the seams first, then the surface. A leak bubbles. Intex notes that laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent do not work, because they do not bubble.
  4. Mark it. Circle the spot with a marker, then let the bed down and dry it.

How to patch it

  1. Clean and dry the area. A patch will not bond to a wet or dusty surface.
  2. Remove flocking if the hole is on the soft top. The repair patch is designed for vinyl only. Intex recommends fine sandpaper or an emery board to rub the flocking away, then nail polish remover to clean the spot.
  3. Apply the patch. Use the patch supplied with the bed, or a replacement: Intex sells repair swatches as part 11410.
  4. Let it set before you inflate again, following the patch kit’s instructions.

When a patch will not help

Intex is clear that a leak in a seam cannot be repaired. A seam leak, or a valve that still will not seal after you replace it, points to a new bed or a warranty claim.

Check the warranty before buying a new bed. Intex gives PremAire and Dura-Beam Deluxe beds a 1-year limited warranty, Dura-Beam Plus 180 days and Dura-Beam Standard 90 days, and asks for the item number and the original receipt.

Stop the next leak

Intex says its airbeds perform best on a solid foundation and that old or damaged bedsprings can damage them. Clear the floor of anything sharp, keep pets’ claws off the bed, and clean it with mild soap and water only: Intex warns never to put an airbed in a washing machine.
