Air mattress sizes: twin, full, queen and king dimensions

Air mattress sizes in inches and centimeters, how they compare to standard beds, weight limits by size, and why an inflated bed may measure smaller.

Air mattresses follow standard bed sizes: twin is about 38 by 75 inches, full 54 by 75, queen 60 by 80 and king 76 by 80. Maker figures run close but are approximate, so check the product page. Twins usually carry a 300 lb limit and larger beds 600 lb on Intex’s ratings.

Twin air mattress dimensions

A twin is the size for one sleeper and for kids’ sleepovers. Intex lists its 12 inch Pillow Rest twin at 39 x 75 x 12 inches with a 300 lb limit, and its FAQ gives the same 300 lb rating for junior twin and twin beds across the range.

For sleepovers and grandparents’ houses, two twins often fit a room better than one queen, and each child gets their own bed. SoundAsleep’s Dream Series also comes in Kids and Big Kids sizes, according to its product page.

One rule has no exceptions: an air mattress is never a bed for a baby. The CPSC warns never to place infants 15 months and younger to sleep on an inflatable air mattress, because infants can suffocate on it or become trapped between the mattress and a wall or bed frame. The AAP says babies sleep in a crib, bassinet, portable crib or play yard that meets CPSC standards.

Full air mattress dimensions

A full (sometimes sold as double) is 54 by 75 inches: the same length as a twin, 16 inches wider. Intex’s PremAire I full lists 54 x 75 x 18 inches and a 600 lb limit, so a full keeps the same load rating as a queen on Intex beds while taking up less floor space.

A full suits a small guest room or a single adult who wants room to turn over. For two adults, the extra length on a queen can matter as much as the width: 75 inches is 6 feet 3 inches, and a queen adds 5 inches to that.

Queen air mattress dimensions

Queen is the size most air mattresses are sold in. Home queens usually match the standard 60 by 80 inches: Intex lists its 12 inch Pillow Rest queen at 60 x 80 x 12 inches, and SoundAsleep lists its Dream Series queen at 80 x 60 x 19 inches.

Camping queens can be smaller. SoundAsleep’s Camping Series queen is 78 x 58 x 9 inches, 2 inches shorter and narrower than a standard queen. King and California king air mattresses

A standard king is 76 by 80 inches and a California king 72 by 84 inches: the California king is narrower and 4 inches longer. Intex rates its king beds at 600 lb, the same as its queens, so a king adds room rather than load capacity.

Fewer air mattresses come in these sizes, and the dimensions vary more between makers. Before you buy a king, check the inflated size on the maker page against the room, and plan for bedding: a king sheet has to cover both the width and the height of the bed.

Why the inflated size can differ from the box

Intex explains that its airbed sizes are approximate and change with pressure and room temperature. Its advice is to measure only after full inflation and to include the bulge on the side you are measuring. A bed measured cold, or before the vinyl has stretched in, can come up short.

Picking a size for your room

Measure the floor space first, then add walking room on at least one side. A queen needs a floor area of 5 by close to 7 feet before you add space to get around it.
