Air mattress sheets, toppers and frames: what fits and stays put

Regular fitted sheets fit an air mattress when the size matches and the pocket is at least as deep as the inflated bed. Intex confirms normal sheets work if the pocket depth is right. Raised beds of 18 to 20 inches need deep pockets, and a topper adds its own thickness. Frames work, but avoid old bedsprings.

Match sheets to the bed

Two numbers decide whether a fitted sheet stays on: the mattress size and the pocket depth.

Size. Most home air mattresses follow standard sizes, such as a queen at 60 by 80 inches. Camping beds can run smaller: SoundAsleep’s Camping Series queen is 78 x 58 inches, so a standard queen sheet will be loose on it. The air mattress sizes guide lists each size.

Pocket depth. Intex’s FAQ says normal sheets work on its airbeds if their pocket depth suits the bed. Measure the height when the bed is fully inflated, since Intex notes sizes shift with pressure and room temperature.

Add the thickness of a topper to the bed’s height before choosing the pocket depth.

Toppers: when they help

A topper puts a layer of padding between the sleeper and the vinyl surface, which changes how the bed feels without changing how it is inflated.

Weigh two points before you add one. It adds height, so recheck your sheet’s pocket depth. And it needs a flat, firm base: an underinflated bed under a topper still sags.

Some beds build comfort layers into the top instead. Intex’s Thermalux uses a tri-layer weave that, Intex says, insulates in cold weather and absorbs moisture on warm nights.

Frames, box springs and platforms

Intex says its airbeds can go on any serviceable bedspring or solid foundation, but perform best on solid foundations, and that old or damaged bedsprings can diminish comfort and even damage the bed. In practice that points to a flat, solid base such as a platform rather than a worn box spring.

Air mattresses with a headboard

Some raised beds include an inflatable headboard, which gives pillows something to rest against. Intex’s Dura-Beam Deluxe Ultra Plush Headboard queen measures 60 x 80 x 18 inches including the headboard, with a built-in electric pump and a Fiber-Tech interior.

Bedding for a camping air bed

A camping queen is smaller and lower than a home bed, so standard queen sheets sit loose and deep pockets are not needed. Care between guests

Intex says an airbed can be washed with mild soap and water using a sponge or soft brush, then rinsed and air-dried, but never submerged or put in a washing machine. Wash sheets and any topper cover as usual, and let the bed dry fully before you fold it away.
