Choose a raised queen air mattress for a couple or for several guests at once: it sleeps two and packs into a bag. Choose a rollaway for one adult who wants foam and a bed that cannot deflate. Choose a tri-fold foam mattress for children or short-notice stays, since it needs no pump but sits only 6 inches high.

This page sets one example of each against the others, using each maker’s own figures. Check the numbers for the exact model you buy. The wider guest bed options comparison also covers sleeper sofas, futons and cots.

Figures from the Intex and Milliard product pages and the Intex airbed FAQ listed under Sources. A standard queen is 60 by 80 inches and a twin 38 by 75, on the Sleep Foundation’s chart.

The rollaway bed: one sleeper, no pump

A rollaway is a folding steel frame on wheels with its own mattress. Milliard’s Deluxe Presidential twin opens to 75 by 38 inches and stands 17 inches tall with its 5 inch memory foam mattress, which Milliard makes dual-sided, firm on one side and soft on the other. It holds 300 lb.

That makes it a good bed for one adult who dislikes air beds, or for a home where the spare bed comes out every few weeks. It never needs an outlet and never needs a top-up.

The trade-offs are width and storage. At 38 inches it is a twin, so it sleeps one. Folded, it is still 44 inches tall, 38 wide and 14 deep, and Milliard lists it at 57 lb, so it needs a closet or a corner of its own.

The tri-fold foam mattress: quick and quiet, but low

A tri-fold is a foam mattress in three hinged panels that lies on the floor. Milliard’s 6 inch version comes in five sizes, from a 75 by 25 inch single to a 78 by 58 inch queen, with a washable polyester and bamboo cover. The queen folds into a block of 58 by 26 by 18 inches and weighs 38 lb.

It cannot deflate and makes no noise, which suits children and short-notice stays. Two things to plan for:

  • Expansion time. Milliard says a new tri-fold can take up to 48 hours to expand fully after unpacking.
  • Height and size. At 6 inches it sits near the floor, and the queen is 2 inches narrower and shorter than a standard 60 by 80 inch queen, so queen sheets fit loosely.

Because Milliard counts the 48 hours from unpacking, open a new tri-fold two days before guests arrive. For an older guest, a bed near regular height is easier to get out of. The raised air mattress guide compares the 18 to 20 inch beds.

Where the air mattress wins, and what it asks of you

A deflated air bed goes back into its own bag, so several can share one shelf.

An air mattress is the only one of the three that sleeps two at standard queen size and then shrinks to a bag. That matters over a holiday weekend, when a house may need several extra beds for a few nights and none of them the rest of the year.

It asks for more care in return. Intex and SoundAsleep both say new vinyl stretches during the first few uses, so a new bed feels softer by morning, and the air inside cools and contracts overnight. Inflate a new bed a day early and top it up at bedtime. A built-in pump also needs a socket within reach of its cord.

Height can be fixed either way: a raised bed, or a frame under a lower one. The air mattress frame guide covers stands and the beds that come fixed to their own frame, and the comfort guide covers toppers and cold floors.

Which one for which guest

Quick pick

A couple: a raised queen air mattress. One adult, staying a week: a rollaway, or a raised air mattress topped up each night. Children at a sleepover: tri-folds or twin air beds, one child per bed. An older guest: whichever bed is closest to regular height, never a mattress on the floor.

None of these is a place for a baby to sleep. The CPSC says never to place infants 15 months and younger to sleep on an inflatable air mattress, and the AAP says babies sleep on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, portable crib or play yard that meets CPSC standards. Ask visiting parents to bring a play yard.

Frequently asked questions

Is a rollaway bed better than an air mattress?

For one adult who wants foam and no pump, often yes: it cannot go soft overnight. For a couple, no. Milliard's twin rollaway is 38 inches wide with a 300 lb limit, while a queen air mattress is 60 by 80 inches and Intex rates its queens at 600 lb.

Is a tri-fold mattress more comfortable than an air mattress?

It is quieter and never loses air, but it is low. Milliard's tri-fold is 6 inches thick, so a guest gets up from near floor level, while raised air mattresses stand 18 to 20 inches tall on maker pages.

How long does a tri-fold mattress take to expand?

Milliard says its 6 inch tri-fold can take up to 48 hours to expand fully after unpacking, so open a new one two days before guests arrive.

Does a rollaway bed need assembly?

The first time, usually. Milliard says its Deluxe Presidential takes 5 to 15 minutes to assemble; after that it unfolds on its wheels.
